Editor's Note: This is a wonderful Luxury Hawaiiana hotel on the beach with ancient fish ponds and an incomparable outdoor tropical spa . And it has the Mauna Lani South and the Mauna Lani North golf courses which are among my favorite Hawaii courses. This is special. Hint: The Standard rooms are more spacious than some of the higher rated categories and they have the better price. The downside is that they look toward the scenic mountains and not the pristine blue Pacific. If you want the space and comfort ask for “Standard.” Traditionally known as Kalahuipua'a, this ancestral home of Hawaiian royalty is now called Mauna Lani, (mountain reaching heaven). This tranquil oasis is the only place where one can view the five surrounding peaks; the Kohala Mountains, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai and Haleakala. There is an ancient energy here that lives in historic fishponds, prehistoric petroglyphs, and the resort itself. Located 20 minutes north of the Kona International Airport, this Kohala Coast beachfront resort has green sea turtles, tropical fish, ancient fishponds and almost three miles of shoreline to explore. Resort amenities include five dining venues, Mauna Lani Spa, a Sports & Fitness Club, Tennis Club, two championship golf courses, water sports and year round children's camp. Rated one of the most romantic spots in Hawaii, Mauna Lani is the perfect site for weddings, honeymoons and nuptial bliss. All guest rooms and suites have a new design that reflects Mauna Lani’s enduring elegance while also adapting to the high tech traveler. The new furnishings are in warm earth tones while the bedding and artwork are in cool soothing shades of green. The key to the refurbishment is keeping the guestrooms tranquil with a sitting area that also offers a desk with easy connections for powering up a laptop. Guestroom improvements include new artwork, wall coverings, carpeting, bedding and linens, a 27” TV, CD player, loveseat, writing desk and chairs. At Mauna Lani all guestrooms also feature spacious private lanais.
